Back-to-School Safety
Let’s keep our Kids Safe this school year! Please review these simple tips to help with Back-to-School Safety for our KIDS! Key focus areas include using designated crosswalks, standing safely away from bus stops, and slowing down in school zones. You can review safety campaigns and guidelines provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website at: https://www.nhtsa.gov/school-bus-safety/keeping-children-safe
Walking and Biking Safety
- Use sidewalks: Walk on sidewalks. If there are none, walk on the left side of the street facing traffic.
- Cross at corners: Only cross at marked crosswalks or intersections with crossing guards. Look left, right, and left again.
- Stay off phones: Put away phones and keep headphone volume low or one ear open to hear cars.
- Wear helmets: Always wear a fitted, buckled helmet when riding a bike, e-bike or scooter.
School Bus Safety
- Stand back: Wait at least 6 feet (three giant steps) back from the curb while waiting for the bus.
- Wait for the signal: Wait until the bus stops completely and the driver signals it is safe to approach or cross.
- Cross in front: Always cross at least 10 feet in front of the bus so the driver can see you.
- Stay seated: Remain seated and keep hands and head inside the bus while it moves.
Driving and Drop-Off Safety
- Slow down: Obey speed limits and watch for children in school zones.
- Stop for buses: Stop completely when a school bus shows flashing red lights.
- Avoid distractions: Put down phones and do not text while driving in school areas.
- Use designated areas: Drop children off only in official school loading zones, never across the street.
