Gene graduated in 1974 from Byron High School and has lived in the Byron community for nearly all his life. Gene and his wife Shirley have one daughter Stephanie. Gene is employed by Rogers Ready Mix and Materials. Gene has volunteered for many community projects and committees such as ByronFest, ByronFest Steering Committe, Byron Community Revitalization group, Dream Works and a variety of Park District programs. Gene also served on the Byron Forest Preserve Board for 10 years and held postions of President, Vice Presedent and Secretary. Gene is currently serving on the Byron Fire District  board of Trustees.
