The Byron Fire Protection District was formed in 1958. The District boundary encases 54 sq. miles and serves a population of approx. 10,000 people. Our Fire Protection Classifications makes for the lowest fire insurance rates in Ogle County and one of the lowest in Northern Illinois. The District employs 9 Full-time Firefighters, 31 Paid-On-Call Firefighters, one secretary, one bookkeeper and one civilian paramedic. One full-time Shift Officer and one full-time firefighter work each 24/48 hour shift with an additional two paid on call firefighters from 5pm until 7am each day, all under the leadership of Chief Mike Lewis. Byron has five staff officers with over 150 years of combined experience. Besides Chief Lewis is Deputy Chris Millard in charge of equipment, maintenance, building preplans, fire prevention and training. Deputy Chief Orin Snodgrass is in charge of personnel, daily operations and computer services. and Mike Traum who is in charge of bookkeeping. A shift Lieutenant Tim Salo who also assist the Training Officer with training. B shift Lieutenant Jeff Hogan is the District Safety Officer and is charge of the dive team. C shift Lieutenant Galen Bennett specializes in the Haz Mat area and Technical Rescue. The three full-time firefighters rotate shifts every six months. The District operates two engines, a heavy rescue, a 95' aerial, one 3500 gallon tanker, two ALS ambulances, a grass truck, and a specialized rescue van for dive calls along with a Technical Rescue trailer for confined space, hazardous materials, trench and rope rescue and structural collapse calls. With a few exceptions, District Board Meetings are held on the fourth Monday of each month at 7:00pm.
