FIREFIGHTER/PARAMEDIC
EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY
The Board of Fire Commissioners of the Byron Fire Protection District announces that it will be testing for the position of Firefighter/Paramedic, for the purposes of establishing an eligibility list for hiring. Applications will be available for pick up with a $10.00 (money order or cash – no checks) non-refundable deposit on Tuesday May 13, 2008 6:30 pm at a mandatory Orientation Meeting at Byron Fire Protection District station, 123 North Franklin Street, Byron, Illinois. A picture ID will be required and applications are due back at the fire station by 4:00 pm May 20, 2008. The written examination will be conducted on May 22, 2008 at 3:00 pm at the Byron Fire Protection District Station.
Any applicant who does not attend the mandatory orientation meeting will be unable to continue the application process. The dates of the complete testing process will be announced at the orientation meeting.

· Applications that are incomplete and/or do not have certificates attached may be discarded without notice.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
1. Age: Must be between the ages of 21 years and 35 years at time of hire, unless a statutory exemption is met.
2. Certification Requirements:
· Must have successfully completed modules “A” and “B” of the Firefighter II certifications issued by the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal by time of hire. Will be required to complete the remainder of Firefighter II;
· Emergency Medical Technician Basic license issued by the Illinois Department of Public Health by the date of hire;
· Must become a Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic within two years of the District enrolling individual into a paramedic class and certify into the Byron Fire Protection District’s resource hospital’s system, which at the time of this announcement is Swedish American Hospital Emergency Medical Service System, within 3 months of completion of paramedic;
· Valid Illinois driver’s license (Must obtain a non-CDL Class B license within 2 months of employment).
3. Vision Standard: Color vision adequate to identify red, green, and yellow color. For visual acuity: 20/30 binocular each eye (corrected) with the ability to use a Self Contained Breathing Apparatus through a corrected lens face piece or contact lens. Peripheral vision of 140 degrees or better.
4. Education: Graduation from high school or evidence of a G.E.D. equivalence diploma.
5. Testing Content: The testing process may include, but may not be limited to:
· Written Examination (60%)
· Oral Exam/Interview (40%)
· The “CPAT” Physical Abilities Test (Pass/Fail)
6. Conditional Offer of Hire: Upon receiving a conditional offer of hire, all candidates will be subject to a personal, employment, credit, and criminal history background check (including State Police and Federal Bureau of Investigation records) , a psychological test, and must pass a complete medical examination, which includes comprehensive drug testing, and may include a polygraph test.
WRITTEN TEST
The written test will be held at Byron Fire Protection District, 123 North Franklin Street on Thursday May 22, 2008 at 3:00pm. A picture ID must be brought in order to take the test. The top 35 scores will proceed to CPAT.
PHYSICAL ABILITY TEST
The District is using the Southwestern Fire Protection District’s CPAT physical examination which will be held tentatively on Saturday July 12, 2008 with times to be announced. Candidates will meet at the testing facility at their appointed time. The address is 7045 Joliet Rd. Indian Head Park, IL 60525 and further instructions may be found on their web site www.sufd.org.
ORAL INTERVIEWS
The top 25 written scores will proceed to oral interviews conducted at Byron Fire Protection District station in the Board Room. Candidates will be notified of their interview date and time.
