The Byron Fire Protection District was formed in 1958. The District boundary encases 54 square miles and serves a population of approximately 10,000 people. Our Fire Protection Classification makes for the lowest fire insurance rates in Ogle County and one of the lowest in Northern Illinois. The District employs 3 Full-Time Shift Officers, 6 Full-Time Firefighters, 28 Paid-On-Call Firefighters, an Administrative Assistant, an Accounting Manager and a Day Paramedic. 1 Full-Time Shift Officer and 2 Full-Time Firefighters work a 24-on/48-off hour shift with an additional 2 Paid-On-Call Firefighters from 5p.m. to 7a.m. each day all under the leadership of Fire Chief Galen Bennett. Byron Fire Protection District’s 2 Deputy Fire Chiefs work closely with Fire Chief Galen Bennett, are Deputy Fire Chief Chris Millard who manages building pre plans, fire prevention and training; the other is Deputy Fire Chief Orin Snodgrass who manages personnel, daily operations and computer service. In addition to the staff of the Byron Fire Protection District’s ranked officers is Lieutenant Tim Salo who runs A-Shift; Lieutenant Jeff Hogan who runs B-Shift and Lieutenant Chris Logston who runs C-Shift. Mike Traum is the department’s Accounting Manager and Michelle Jorge-Trzcinski is the department’s Administrative Assistant. Byron Fire Protection District operates 3 Engines, a Heavy Rescue, 95’ mid-mount Aerial, a 3500 gallon Tender, 2 ALS Ambulances, Grass Rig and rapid response rescue boat. Byron Fire Protection District is also in charge of operating the MASBAS Division 18 Technical Rescue Trailer.
